Update: SilverSHielD v6.1.8.138

We have just released SilverSHielD version 6.1.8.138.

This new version resolves an issue with the Management Console, where the PKI and Virtual Folders tabs would become read-only for certain user profiles.

Warning: if you’re upgrading from a version prior to 6.1.5.135, installing this new version may lead to loss/invalidation of your license. So if you are a licensed customer, please, contact Extenua before applying this update/upgrade. Thank you.

Always check before you update…

If you’re still running an old version of SilverSHielD (older than 5.5) please always contact Extenua before performing the update/upgrade.

In fact, the v6.x installer is guaranteed to automatically import your configuration, settings, and users when upgrading from v5.5, but may not be able to import from older formats.

An upgrade from version 4 or early 5 can be performed via an intermediate upgrade to version 5.5. Upgrade from older versions (developed by K2SXS before the acquisition by Extenua) may not be possible. So, please, contact us if you’re facing these scenarios.

Upgrading from v5.5 or older to the latest version 6.x, instead, is totally automatic and can be performed right away, no need to contact us in this case.

Fixing SQLite3 Error 8

If you have upgraded SilverSHielD from an old version (5.x or earlier) to the latest version you may see a “SQLite3 Error 8” message when attempting to save the configuration through the management console, or to apply a new license code.

Activating license behind a firewall/proxy

SilverSHielD provides two alternative methods for license activation behind a corporate firewall/proxy, or when the server is totally offline (private LAN with no Internet access).

If the Internet is accessible through a proxy, there is a specific configuration panel in the Management Console, as shown in the image below.

Firewall rules to ensure Cloud2Drive can work

In order to make sure Cloud2Drive works on your endpoint, please, make sure that:

  • There is an exception in your Windows Firewall that allows unrestricted Internet access to the Cloud2Drive main executable (Cloud2Drive.exe); this exception rule is set by the Cloud2Drive installer itself, but in case this doesn’t happen you will need to create such exception manually
  • If you have a network firewall, make sure it allows outbound requests to your cloud storage provider’s servers, and HTTPS (port 443) access to Extenua’s Head Server cluster at head.extenua.com

These settings are required to ensure proper operation of the Cloud2Drive agent.

Cloud2Drive’s cache files location on disk

Depending on the operating system, you can find your Cloud2Drive cache files in different locations.

If you’re running Windows XP or 2003 they are in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Extenua\C2DCache\

If you’re running Windows Vista, 2008, 7, 2012, or 8 they are in:

C:\ProgramData\Extenua\C2DCache\

Using the catch-all (*) virtual user to relay authentication to an Active Directory

SilverSHielD v6.0 introduces significant enhancements to user management, especially with regards to its support for Active Directory.

It is possible to authenticate all your AD users in SilverSHielD by creating a special user profile and using * (star, or asterisk) as a username; that user must be allowed to perform password authentication, and the “use Windows/AD account auth” option must be enabled. See the image below for a visual example. Read more
